GPS Accuracy Improves Worldwide

Improvements to the overall GPS navigation system are expected to be completed this spring. Average GPS users who depend on these devices for street navigation will be unaware of the changes. The improvements, however, will give American troops a drastic advantage over current systems.

Originally, GPS or Global Positioning System was a project developed by the Air Force and intended for military use only. Safeguarded as top-secret, the GPS satellites were found to be accurate to the millionth of a second, sending time signals and radio waves back to Earth. Once the Air Force realized how effective the satellites were, they opened up the system to the public, causing the popularity of GPS to soar. Today, there are over one billion customers, many of whom access GPS through their Smartphone.

The improvements, which started back in January of 2010, will benefit troops in Afghanistan by closing the current gaps in the system. The terrain of Afghanistan is especially challenging because of canyons and gorges throughout the land. For troops in Afghanistan, the GPS signal is unable to reach them during crucial times.  The Army is supplying GPS guided mortars to our soldiers in Afghanistan.  The typical mortar was a simple explosive device which was dropped into a tube and was launched with it hit the bottom.  The problem with it was that its accuracy depended on the angle of the tube as well as the wind conditions at the time of  the launch.

The updated version, called the APMI, uses the standard high explosive, 120mm mortar body and installs a GPS computer and receiver in the front most end.  This allows for greater precision and control of the mortar's directional fins, ensuring a much higher degree of target accuracy.  In other words, the higher the degree of target accuracy, the lower the amount of civilian collateral damage due to their inverse proportional relationship.  In addition to its improved accuracy, APMI also reduces the frequency with which the soldiers are supplied with ammunition.  In the past a unit might have to carry 25 high-explosive rounds in order to take out a single target. That's because their inherent inaccuracy typically requires volleys of fire in order to destroy a target. With the improved accuracy offered by APMI, it may take only one or two rounds to eliminate the same target.

Getting back to improving GPS accuracy worldwide, in order to fix the issue of dropped signals and poor accuracy, the navigation satellites are being spread apart to cover larger areas of the Earth. To accomplish this, months of work and intricate math problems are involved to make the small, even minuscule moves in the sky. Once completed, the Global Positioning System will provide the most comprehensive coverage in its history.

Better Android GPS

A common problem with Android devices across the board seems to be the performance of the GPS. Despite the different devices and manufactures, this is a common complaint among Android owners and unfortunately the root cause can be different depending on the device. The GPS signal on Android devices can be very intermittent and sometimes drops the signal or has trouble locking on. Here are some tips to help resolve this problem.
Clear Your Map Cache

Depending on which navigation app you use, such as Google Maps, you can clear your map cache to help get a better lock and faster response time when using GPS. You can find and clear your cache by going to Manage Applications and under Menu choose Filter -> Show All. This will list all apps on your device. Choose each app that uses GPS and clear its cache.
If this does not clear up the problem, it may be an issue with the connection data itself. Your device may not have the correct information to connect to the satellites necessary to use GPS, which is causing the connection problem.
Use Assisted GPS

Assisted GPS (AGPS) is used by most smart phones these days and is a method of using cell towers to assist in locating your signal. This method of location is less precise than true GPS locating, but is faster because your GPS module does not need to connect to a satellite before it can begin to locate you. Assisted GPS is also helpful if you do not have clear skies and cannot get in contact with a satellite.
Assisted GPS will also make use of available Wi-Fi networks to help pinpoint your location which can dramatically change the amount of time it takes to provide your position.
To enable assisted GPS on your Android device, go to Settings -> Location & Security Settings and check the checkbox for Enable Assisted GPS.
Note that Assisted GPS will constantly be searching for and connecting to cell towers while this feature is on, creating a noticeable drain on your battery. This is most likely a feature you do not want to always leave enabled but is definitely helpful when you are using your device for navigation.
If you are still having trouble with your GPS after turning AGPS on, you can try resetting your Assisted GPS Data.
Using GPS Status & Toolbox

Sometimes the problem continues because the data for towers and satellites that your phone holds is incorrect for your location. The GPS Status & Toolbox is an app available in the Android market and is used to wipe out and re-download the AGPS data. This can help your device acquire the correct towers and get up-to-date satellite information. Once you have downloaded the app, here are the steps to get your new data:

When you start the app, you will see a compass and the data statistics for your phone. Be sure you have an active data connection.

Go to Manage A-GPS State.

Click Download in the menu.

Exit the app when it is finished.

This will remove all of the old Wi-Fi and satellite information in your device and download the most pertinent data for your current location. You should now check your navigation app to see if you can get a location lock. After this process it should be much quicker.
The downside to this process is that you will most likely need to repeat it on a regular basis. Any time your GPS begins to act up, you will need to download new AGPS data using the GPS Status & Toolbox app. Annoying but a small price to pay for your navigation to work correctly.
If your GPS is still not working correctly after downloading new AGPS data, your only recourse may be to root your phone and flash a new ROM or radio to your device. This can make your GPS more reliable as some ROMs have configuration tweaks that can be used to make the radio work better. While this step may be extreme for some in order to fix their GPS and it can be a bit riskier, it can sometimes make your device work better, if you are prepared to deal with the consequences of rooting your device to make it happen.
Hopefully by working through these steps you are able to obtain a better GPS signal and a faster lock. Remember that if your device continues to act up you may need to continue using the GPS Status & Toolbox app to reset your connection data. Since this problem seems worse in some Android devices than others, you may also want to look into changing devices if you cannot get the GPS to work reliably.

Best Samsung Mini Notebooks

Mini notebooks are still very popular in 2012 even though tablets overtook them in terms of sale in 2011. Samsung is number one in the world of mini notebooks and sells millions of them every year. Here is the list of best Samsung mini notebooks in the world.

Samsung N145: This comes equipped with a 10.1 inch display that packs 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. Powered by Atom N450 processor, it is recommended for those who prefer battery life over performance. It weighs in at 1.5 kilo grams and boasts Intel GMA 3150 graphics that handle office apps and SD YouTube videos like a charm. Its GPU is slightly faster than the GMA 950 that was being used in older Atom processors.

Samsung NF310: If you want the perfect balance of power and battery life, then you might want to check out the NF310. It comes with Atom N550, a dual core processor in which each core runs at 1.5GHz clock speed. This results in faster boot up and application start up times. The processor has a TDP of 8.5 watts and fully supports 64 bit operating systems like Windows 7 and Ubuntu. In the PCMark Vantage benchmark test, it scores 1780, which is much higher than single core Atom chips. This also puts it in league with low end AMD Fusion chips. However, it falls back badly in the graphics department, chiefly due to GMA 3150. The screen of NF310 packs much higher number of pixels when compared to a traditional mini notebook. It packs 1366 x 768 as compared to 1024 x 600.

Samsung NC10: If you are extremely low on cash and need a fully functional computer, NC10 would be a good choice for you. Its specs include the very power frugal Atom N455 1.66GHz processor, 10.1 inch display, 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, 320GB hard disk drive, 1GB DDR3 RAM, Intel GMA 3150 graphics and a 6 cell battery that is rated to give you around 8-9 hours of continuous runtime. Despite its small size, you will have almost no problem in typing on its keyboard. The touchpad accepts multi touch gestures and two-finger scroll works like a charm.

Samsung 305U1A: If money is not a problem, I highly recommend getting the Series 3 305U1A mini notebook. It features the new AMD E-450 accelerated processing unit that incorporates ATi Radeon HD 6320 graphics processing unit. This APU runs at 1.65GHz clock speed and has two cores that are capable of handling two threads at a time. It has a TDP of 18 watts and is fully 64 bit compatible.

GPS Tracking To Help You Find Your Way

Fitting a GPS Tracking system helps Fleet Vehicle Managers offer assistance in a number of different ways. These small unobtrusive devices can be programmed to give real time feedback as to a vehicles exact position or save predetermined information, such as speed, direction, stopping times etc to a memory chip to be analysed later.

The use of GPS devices for monitoring and controlling fleet vehicles such as courier services, haulage companies and taxis provides an excellent way of effectively using your vehicles. At any one time you can predict with pinpoint accuracy where your van, lorries and cars are situated.

Along with enabling more efficient use of your resources, you are able to offer customers a more reliable and personalised service. They will not be left wondering when the taxi will arrive or do they need to take the day off to receive a parcel, as you are able to give them accurate advice as to where your vehicle is currently situated.

A further beauty offered by GPS trackers is the ability to offer drivers advice concerning traffic chaos, inclement weather or road accidents. Today's ever changing weather can be very unpredictable and seemingly more severe than at previous times. Drivers will benefit from being given additional information concerning flooded or blocked roads, areas to avoid in the event of blizzards and should they find themselves in the heart of the storm, you can show them the best way out.

Breaking down or getting lost is one of the unavoidable joys of driving and when this happens you can often find yourself in strange territory. Especially with haulage drivers, delivering to unfamiliar addresses. Despatch offices can figure out exactly where a stranded driver is and direct repair and rescue teams to the area or if the weather suddenly turns nasty they are able to give drivers directions to service stations or rest points where they can wait out the storm.

During distressing times GPS tracking can alleviate the worry and frustration a stranded driver can experience and reassure them that mechanics are on the way in the event of a breakdown.

The price of this assistance is relatively small and Fleet Managers are able to access their vehicles position by simply logging on to the Internet, through a normal desktop PC, although systems are also available that work on mobile devices and laptops for managers who are constantly on the move. With a GPS tracking system you never need to worry about knowing where your drivers are, no matter what the weather conditions are outside.

Alex is rather ashamed to admit that he has a tendency to get lost and he has hence invested in a GPS tracking device as well as a fleet tracking solution for his company.
